Traffic stop nets 40 pounds of marijuana

Tangipahoa Parish sheriff’s deputies have arrested a man accused of having 40 pounds of marijuana in the pickup he was driving this weekend.

Joseph Fairweather, 27, of Hudson, Fla., was stopped Saturday morning after deputies observed a red pickup swerving on and off eastbound Interstate 12, Sheriff’s Office spokeswoman Dawn Panepinto said Monday.

When deputies stopped him, Fairweather appeared nervous but allowed deputies to search the vehicle, Panepinto said.

The deputies found eight individually wrapped packages of what they suspected to be marijuana, each weighing about five pounds, Panepinto said.

Fairweather said he was being paid $5,000 to take marijuana from Texas to Florida, Panepinto said.

Fairweather was booked on counts of improper lane usage and possession with intent to distribute, Panepinto said.

Fairweather was released Saturday after posting $50,000 bail, a jail spokesman said.
