Regional track meets for teams in Class 2A and 1A, along with the first day of the Louisiana High School Athletic Association’s Division II-Class 3A and below girls golf tournament help highlight Tuesday’s busy schedule of high school sports action.
Zachary’s Copper Mill Golf Club is the site of the two-day Division II girls golf tourney. Tee times start at 8 a.m.
The Dunham School won the local regional title two weeks ago. University High, Runnels and Episcopal also qualified for the tourney. Episcopal’s Julia Johnson won the individual title with a 73 and is expected to be among the contenders for the individual title along with runner-up Anna Heine of University.
Dunham’s Sydney Cavin and Runnels’ Taylor Kennedy are other competitors to watch in the 33-golfer field. The two-day event concludes Wednesday at Copper Mill.
Episcopal and White Castle High are among the local schools set to host regional track meets Tuesday. Also, Ascension Catholic will host the one-day Division V-Class 1A, Region III boys golf tournament at the The Island Golf Course located in Plaquemine.
CLASS 2A, REGION 2: Field events begin at 3 p.m. at Episcopal with running events to follow at 5:30 p.m.
Teams from Baton Rouge-based District 7-2A will compete against teams from two Acadiana area districts, 4-2A and 6-2A.
Episcopal’s Christian Johnson (1,600 meters and 3,200) and Julian Darden (110 hurdles, 300 hurdles) have the top marks in multiple events, while U. High’s Devontay Dotson won both the 100 and 200 meters.
Catholic-New Iberia and West St. Mary are among the other teams to watch in both divisions. Episcopal swept the team titles at the 7-2A meet. University and The Dunham School will be among the other local schools to watch.
UHS’ Gabby Despinasse (discus, shot put) was a double winner on the girls side. Catholic-NI and WSM are among the girls teams to watch along with host Episcopal and U-High.
CLASS 1A, REGION 3: White Castle is hosting with field events at 2 p.m. Running events are scheduled for 4:30 p.m. with teams from local districts 7-1A and 9-1A entered.
West St. John (girls) and Ascension Catholic (boys) are among the 9-1A teams to watch, while Kentwood’s boys and girls help lead the list of 7-1A teams to note.
St. John’s Chris Bordelon (shot put, discus), West St. John’s Jairus Moll (100, 200) and Ascension Catholic’s Zach Capello (1,600, 3,200) were double winners on the boys side in 9-1A. East Iberville’s Keionne Octave (100, 200, 400) was a multiwinner on the girls side.
CLASS 1A, REGION 2: Field events start at 2 p.m. with running events to follow at 6 p.m. at the University of Louisiana at Lafayette. Competitors from District 6-1A are set to compete.
CLASS 1A, REGION III: Tee times start at 8 a.m. at The Island in Plaquemine. Ascension Catholic’s Ray Rodrigue, who shot a 78 at last week’s Boys Metro Tournament, is among the competitors to watch.
Catholic-Pointe Coupee’s Clayton David and ACHS’ Taylor Landry are others to note.
