Nestled among the live oaks on two acres overlooking Bayou Manchac, the home at 18867 Bienville Court is loaded with Southern charm. Step inside and be swept away by the winding entry staircase. Scarlett O’Hara would feel right at home swishing down the stairs in this elegant foyer.
The floors are travertine, and the ceiling soars to 20 feet, past a balcony at the top of the staircase that overlooks the foyer and the great room. Lots of interior brick — Old St. Louis — and wood floors highlight this home, located just inside Ascension Parish just south of Santa Maria. Other amenities that Scarlett would have loved at Tara include night light motion sensors that turn on the lights after dark in the halls and bathrooms, four air conditioning units, surround sound and wireless Internet. Plus, Scarlett could have used the home’s security system and video monitoring to watch for Yankee soldiers.
Seriously, this home has some really neat features and amenities, including tankless water heating, a central vacuum system that automatically inhales sweepings, a copper roof over the elevated front porch and a sprinkler system for the immaculate landscaping. The hilly back yard has a pair of ancient live oaks, and the home’s fabulous pool and spa overlook it all.
The home’s exterior is entirely brick — 34,000 bricks in all — which has to be a big saver when it comes to maintenance. The entry foyer’s walls are brick too, with the formal living room to the left and the formal dining room on the opposite side. Straight ahead, below the balcony, the great room rises to match the foyer’s ceiling. Stacked windows basically represent a wall of light to a fabulous pool and stone patio. The top row of windows is arched, and glass transoms are above windows and doorways throughout the home.
The kitchen and breakfast room are just off the great room, separated by a massive crescent-shaped 3cm granite island. This big kitchen has lots of matching granite counters and cypress cabinetry, as well as a KitchenAid appliance package that includes a double oven, a warming drawer, an oversized refrigerator, an icemaker, two garbage disposals and a 6-burner gas cook top on the island. There are two sinks: one below a pair of wood windows and the other on the island. Flooring the kitchen and breakfast room is ceramic tile with granite inserts. French doors lead to the stone patio, and a mother-in-law wing with a full bath and an exit to the home’s second two-car garage is nearby. A hallway off the foyer leads to a powder room and past French doors to the home’s office, which has more French doors to the patio.
The master suite, meanwhile, has a tray ceiling, two ceiling fans and a bay wall with three big wood windows to the back yard. Carpet floors the bedroom, and travertine with granite accents is in the opulent master bath. Two opposing granite vanities — one with a make-up desk — are below a ceiling fan, not far from a 6- foot air bubbler tub and a walk-in shower with a hand-held sprayer. The master closet is more like the master closet room, with a wall of cabinets and dressers as a dividing line down the middle. This closet is so sizable that it needs two windows for natural light. Each of the two windows has seating below.
Upstairs, four bedrooms are serviced by two full baths. The highlight up here though is the purple-and-gold LSU game room, complete with tiger-striped carpeting, a wet bar with refrigerator, and a balcony that overlooks the stone patio and pool. A round spa cascades down into another round pool, which cascades into another pool that falls into the big irregular-shaped gunite pool. There’s a waterfall effect here, complete with soothing sound. For those more into fitness than relaxation, the pool also has a swim jet at one end.
It’s a beautiful property on a large treed lot in the back of Manchac Plantation.
