South Louisiana has experienced numerous “mop-up” operations. It may be a stretch, but mops also can be included in the list of hurricane season essentials. Eliminating water from businesses and residences following tropical storm or hurricane flooding is one of the first chores. Dan Theobald is an expert in water purification and conservation. He contends mop waste water may include pertinent cleaners but also particulate matter from floors.
Where flood water contains limited contaminants, industrial plant floor water contains a toxic blend of chemicals, especially in maintenance areas of factories, hospitals and steel mills. Theobald said he believes the chemical makeup and volume of mop waste water, compared with general waste water, requires explicit handling, storage, analysis and treatment before discharge into environmental waters.
