Pat Shingleton’s Weather News for June 22, 2014

In days of old a “barn-burner” was followed by a bucket brigade to extinguish a blazing barn. Years later, it identified something that was highly exciting or impressive.

A “barn-raising” solicited neighbors to construct the first, largest and most costly structure for a family. The Amish could do it in a day, and as noted in a previous column, the folks that started the Home Energy Efficient Team in 2008 have embraced their example.

H.E.E.T. uses the Amish example to gather neighbors to weatherproof their homes. Construction experts volunteer their time to insulate pipes, install weather stripping and weatherize homes.

Similar to a barn-raising event, homeowners secure the materials and “vittles” to collectively accomplish the task.
