A few years ago my mom forwarded a copy of the Ellwood City Area Historical Society Newsletter. The issue detailed the first covered bridge connecting Hazel Dell and Ellwood. The bridge length was 165 feet with a width of 12 feet, 8 inches. The width was determined to accommodate the size of buggies and wagons. As noted, these bridges were also constructed to provide shelter for travelers during inclement weather. This particular issue of the Newsletter also included an excerpt on the use of the “spring house.” These structures were built adjacent to a well for fresh, spring water. They were cool enough to preserve milk and meat from spoilage during the summer months.
