Hot days, cool parties BY PAM BORDELON| Advocate staff writer Aug. 04, 2014 Comments . Summer’s in full swing, and, most afternoons, Baton Rouge resembles a sauna. But that doesn’t put a damper on our party spirit, though. We may not be partying quite as fast and furious as we do in the fall and spring, but we’re having tons of fun when we all get together. VIPS ‘Annie’ One of summer’s traditions is the special performance of Theater Baton Rouge’s summer musical benefiting Volunteers in Public Schools. This year the production is the beloved Broadway hit “Annie,” and it packed the house for the June 11 fundraiser. The night got underway with a reception chaired by Alison Gary in the theater’s community room. Assisting her were committee members Sister Helen Cahill, Bridgett Johnson, Lauren Juengling, Pam Morgan, Lamonica Solomon, Brittany Walker Sykes and board Chairwoman Mary Lou Potter. Hosts for the reception included Troy Chapman, Pat Friedrich, Gus Levy, Olivia Mack and Sue and Floyd Sones. I didn’t get to stay for the whole performance, just long enough to see Annie, played by Molly Beth Blanchard, daughter of friends Sonya and Brad Blanchard, and the adorable cast of orphans perform “It’s the Hard Knock Life,” with choreography by buddy Mary Bayle. You can get a glimpse of it at theadvocate.com/columnists/pambordelon. Big Buddy Friday the 13th started off as a stormy day but calmed down just in time for Big Buddy’s thank-you luncheon at First United Methodist’s Conference Center fêteing participants and sponsors in this year’s “Dancing for Big Buddy.” It was fun to rehash that magical night as Co-Chairmen Reid Bateman and Terri LeBlanc passed out the commemorative photos and plaques. In keeping with tradition, we all discussed how we might make next year’s event even better. Then there was the passing of the baton from Reid to incoming Co-Chairman Ty Hingle, who will work with Terri to make the ninth “Dancing for Big Buddy” the best ever. Stay tuned to Party Line and we’ll have the 2015 lineup of Star Dancers as soon as they’re announced . BR Links Over the past 20 years, I’ve had the pleasure of witnessing the special bonds of friendship that bind members of The Links. On June 7, six women were welcomed into the Baton Rouge Chapter in a special ceremony at Juban’s Restaurant. Introduced by membership Chairwoman and Vice President Rose Hudson were Sharman Charles, Felecia Jones, Britney Temple, Courtney Humphrey, Shelia Sterling and Erin Monroe Wesley. Leading a toast to welcome them into the fold was immediate past President Brenda Birkett. Kevin Cunningham gave the toast welcoming the new “Connecting Links,” aka members’ husbands. Yolanda Dixon is president of the Baton Rouge Chapter, The Links Inc. Fellow officers include Helena Cunningham, treasurer; Gwen Hamilton, corresponding secretary; Ernise Singleton, financial secretary; Cheryl Hall-DeRouen, recording secretary; and Natalie Tellis Robertson, parliamentarian.
