Our Views: Blue ribbons for schools Our Views: Blue ribbons for schools Advocate story March 17, 2014 Comments A hearty felicitation is due to some of the state’s language immersion schools, recognized for educational excellence. The Louisiana Department of Education certified five campuses as world language immersion schools, gaining them some bragging rights for meeting high standards for instruction. The schools are the International School of Louisiana, which has two campuses in New Orleans and one in Metairie, and two schools in the East Baton Rouge Parish school system — Westdale Middle School and Baton Rouge Foreign Language Academic Immersion Magnet. The new certification was approved by the 2013 Legislature. It’s based on overall excellence in offering high-quality, highly-effective world language immersion learning and teaching. The value of immersion in a foreign language is not just in the fluency in that language. Foreign language instruction, in regular classes but particularly in an immersion school, is a key indicator that students will do better in English. The study of the one language enhances the other. We commend the new schools and hope more will qualify for the awards in future.
