TV sinking to new low

For those that don’t know, there is a TV reality show almost ready for your viewing pleasure called “All My Babies’ Mamas.”

Okay, have you caught your breath yet?

Carlos Walker, aka, Shawty Lo, a crotch-grabbing, sagging pants rapper, is the star of the show and impregnator extraordinaire.

The upcoming Oxygen Network’s show about the Atlanta-area baby maker is slopping over into the entertainment sewer. How else do you explain the idea to promote a show about a man fathering 11 children with 10 mamas. One mama came back for seconds?

Another neat part of the show involves the 36-year-old Shawty Lo showing off his 19-year-old girlfriend. In a few weeks she could earn her spot as baby mama No. 11.

Many in the African-American community and family-values groups argue that the show aims to profit by promoting degrading images of black life and by humiliating the children’s mothers.

Of course it does, but I’m not for pulling the show, just yet.

A statement from the network defends the show, saying it “is not meant to be a stereotypical representation of everyday life for any one demographic. … It is a look at one unique family and their complicated, intertwined life.”

Baloney!

Author and Media Commentator Sabrina Lamb has been the main advocate of killing the show before it airs. She complains that the show will perpetuate black stereotypes, encourage unprotected sex and glosses over child exploitation.

In an interview published by Essence Magazine, Lamb said, “We have to start to draw a line in the sand. We have to decide who we really are, and while we’re deciding that, can we at least understand that our first duty is to protect and nurture our children.”

I agree with her contentions, but not on killing the show.

I, too, was appalled after watching the show’s trailer. It will be one of the worse, most-irresponsible, most-demeaning shows ever. The participants are startling in their stupidity.

Shawty Lo says he is a responsible father because he throws money at the mamas. Well that’s apparently all that it takes to be a baby daddy, but to be a father takes much more.

My concern with killing the show before it airs is that an equally offended group could rise up in the future against a positive portrayal of life in the African-American community.

Instead, I say don’t watch and don’t do business with the advertisers.

The reality is that the show is going to do well the first night because of the controversy. It will appeal to a certain segment of society because those baby mamas do have families, friends and folks who excuse this kind of show by saying, “It’s all about the Benjamins.”

I say speak out against the crudeness of the show. And, don’t watch. Hopefully, this will be the show that hits rock bottom in the sleazy world of reality TV.

Maybe this, as the now-fashionable statement goes, is “a teaching moment” for young people about the perils of unprotected sex, how to build a family and the true responsibilities of rearing children.

Nicholas Johnson, an Iowa City School Board member, said it well more than a decade ago: “All television is educational television. The question is: what is it teaching?”

"Not acceptance of homosexuals and evolution that's messing up America." Twinkie1cat, REALLY? LOL! And the only people that "bash and batter" Louisiana, are the small percentage of liberals living in a conservative state. Maybe we conservatives can make it even worse and it can cause more bashing liberals to leave the state. As far as the rest of the country disapproving of Louisiana, they can go suck crawfish tails.

@spqr, We already know. Now they just want to make money on being stupid. And they know that there are people, just as stupid as they are, that will watch this show. People like freak shows. It's why I quit watching T.V. 10 years ago. This show will just show how stupid they are and give reasons to stereotype. Nothing more. The black community should fight this one and help these people clean up their act.

I think I read somewhere that octomom is back on welfare or food stamps...those kids won't benefit....the selfish attitude that got them and SL a reality show is the same attitude that will ensure any funds get used on momma and poppa first. them gals gotta get their weaves tightened, and SL needs some new tennis shoes. those poor kids might luck out on a one-time spending spree at k-mart.

Good point SPQR. It's reality shows, not acceptance of homosexuals and evolution that's messing up America.

The people who make and appear in reality shows are not stupid. They are choosing to make money exploiting themselves like a bunch of sideshow freaks. They are not slaves. No one forced them at gunpoint to make these shows. The kids might be embarrassed eventually, but actually they benefit from the money too and can have a better life. It is the same as with the octomom, she chose to have all those babies so she also chose to have her life dissected. But there are consequences of celebrity and that is important to remember too. That is why it always grinds me when celebrities gripe and whine about the paparazzi following them and taking their picture. It is the price one pays for fame. If they don't like it then stop making records, movies, reality shows or whatever to boost their income into a higher tax bracket and go to work at Walmart...... As for your snide remark about Atlanta, Gerald, at least it is not being bashed and battered by conservatives taking over like we are in Louisiana. And believe me, Shawty Lo WILL have to pay his child support in Georgia. Plus, they probably don't even live in Atlanta but in Metro Atlanta which covers a 12- 21 county area almost to Macon and the Alabama line. Watch it if you want to, but nobody is being exploited. Personally, I watch NO reality shows. I'm more concerned about the image of people in Louisiana as a bunch of alligator killing rednecks, myself. They are exploiting our state and making people think we all live in the woods. It used to be that the only thing people knew about Louisiana was New Orleans and that was from COPS.

And we want to know why American culture is in decline and why so many of our children are so barbaric.

This specific show may make this an African American issue, but it is much broader than that. I don't know if Jerry Springer got this started or not, but these kind of shows have certainly proliferated since he started his. Most of these shows are hard to watch. We can only hope, if all television is educational, more people are turned off than on by these often disgusting, irresponsible antics.

Typical; especially for Atlanta.

Thank you, Mr. Pratt for the advanced information. Please use this comment section to list the sponsors, as I will not be watching the show to learn the businesses beyond Oxygen Network to boycott.

That should be "a white car thief or killer."

While they're at it, someone needs to do something about the stereotyping on _Bait Car_, _48 Hours_ and other reality cop shows - they almost never have a car thief or killer. Also how many NBA salaries are encumbered for child support and for how many children?

It is called reality TV and i am sure Shawty Lo is not the worst 'offender' just the most visible.
