Rides swapped for Christmas toys
The Baker Police and Fire departments are trading rides for new, unwrapped toys from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m. on Dec. 12 and Dec. 13, at the Wal-Mart parking lot at Groom and Plank roads.
The firefighters are offering rides on a fire truck, and police officers will give rides in their DARE car.
The Baker Rotary Club will distribute the toys to needy children.
The Fire Department also will be driving Santa Claus through Baker neighborhoods Dec. 18-22.
The Feliciana Chapter of Osher Lifelong Learning Institute at LSU is sponsoring a Christmas tour of historic downtown Jackson at 9:45 a.m. Wednesday, including a visit to Roseneath, Milbank Bed and Breakfast, the old Jackson Post Office, Old Centenary Inn and the antique Southern Belle railroad dining car.

The Julius Freyhan Foundation will celebrate the restoration of Temple Sinai in St. Francisville’s historic district from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m. Sunday with a program that includes author Anne Butler’s presentation on the temple’s history and the town’s Jewish community.
The building is behind Grandmother’s Buttons, near the parish courthouse.
The public is invited to attend, and visitors are asked to call Karry Hosford, (601) 334-0006, to reserve a seat.
The annual Baker Christmas parade is scheduled at 10 a.m. Saturday from the Lavey Lane shopping area to the Municipal Center, where hot dogs and treats will be served.
The Friends of the Clinton Branch of the Audubon Regional Library will sponsor a Christmas program and fundraiser for the library at 10:30 a.m. Dec. 13, starring the preschool and kindergarten students of Silliman Institute.
The program will be at the Feliciana Baptist Church hall, and a $5 donation is requested.
Rosedown Plantation State Historic Site in St. Francisville continues its monthly guided garden tour program at 10 a.m. Friday, led by manager/horticulturist Patricia Aleshire.
The program begins at the site office.
Admission to only the garden is $5.
The admission fee for all areas ranges from $4 to $10, depending on the visitor’s age.
The site’s annual “Christmas at Rosedown” program is scheduled for Dec. 15 and Dec. 16.
Family members of people buried in the Zachary Public Cemetery will meet at 6:30 p.m. Dec. 13 at the Best Western Zachary Inn’s conference room, 4030 La. 19.
Anyone with problems, questions or complaints involving the cemetery is invited to attend.
A representative of the organization, Eternal Justice, will attend the meeting and Tuesday’s Zachary City Council session to talk about the cemetery.
