The International Landslide Centre reports the dominant global trigger for landslides is monsoon rain. Weatherwise magazine noted tropical cyclones generate extreme rainfall that activates landslides in Asia and hurricanes have the same effect on sections of the Caribbean and Central America. Landslides kill 10 times more people around the world than previously believed. The center recently developed a data base that provides the first detailed analysis of worldwide landslide fatalities. Fatalities are concentrated in China, Central and South America. Deforestation, the melting of permafrost in mountainous areas and population densities are additional factors in the cause, extent and effects of the landslides. This research will assist governments to initiate steps to minimize loss and implement life-saving measures. Fastcast: Showers.
