Around Ascension for Sept. 21, 2012

The exhibit “200 Years of Taste,” designed by the Southern Food and Beverage Museum in New Orleans, will be displayed at the Ascension Parish Library Dutchtown branch through Oct. 6, a library official said.

The exhibit will show heritage ingredients and dishes as they are related to the geography, environment and historical timeline of Louisiana as the state celebrates its bicentennial.

“What better way to trace the history of Louisiana than by the culinary tastes and customs of our people?” asked Angelle Deshautelles, director of the Ascension Parish Library. “We have been celebrating the bicentennial throughout 2012 with various programming and events and are happy to continue the celebration, as the year winds down, with this important exhibit. It’s sort of the icing on the cake.”

The exhibit, which has been displayed at various libraries throughout Louisiana since April, is a collaboration between the Southern Food and Beverage Museum, the Foodways Subcommittee of the Bicentennial Commission and the Bicentennial Commission of Louisiana.

Jambalaya sale

Dutchtown High School cheerleaders are selling jambalaya lunches Friday to raise money for the squad.

The $5 lunches will be sold from 10:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. in front of the school’s gym on La. 73 in Geismar.

Collage class planned

Learn the tips to creating fabulous art during a collage class at the Ascension Parish Library’s Galvez class.

Drawing skills are not needed to create collage pieces for this class.

Residents can learn how to create textured wall art using mixed media during the two-day program, which starts at 4:30 p.m. Wednesday and wraps up the following afternoon at the same time at the library’s Galvez branch. The program is for youths 12 and older.

Community art show set

River Community Church is inviting artists ages 14 and older to submit paintings and photos for its third community art show.

Artists can submit one entry to the free show that begins Oct. 28. The theme of the show is “Fruit of the Spirit.”

Artists are limited to one entry. Art must be framed properly or on gallery-wrapped canvas, with a wire on the back for hanging.

All entries should be submitted from 8:45 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Oct. 21 and from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Oct. 22-23 at the church.

Entry forms and submission information are available online at www.rivercommunity.org under “events” and in the church office, 36367 Old Perkins Road, in Prairieville. The opening reception will be from 3 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. Oct. 28 at the church.

The exhibit will be on display Oct. 28 to Nov. 18. Viewing will be from 8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Sundays or by appointment.
