Smiley Anders for Sept. 21, 2012

When I read this story from Dr. George S. Bourgeois, of Opelousas, I was having lunch at my desk and laughed so hard I sprayed Barq’s Diet Root Beer everywhere.

Here’s what Dr. George said that made me guffaw:

“Retired dentist and close friend Dr. David Couvillon told me this true story and has given me permission to pass it on to you.

“He and wife, Vonne, were having some friends, a young couple with a newborn baby, over for a visit.

“The mother was breast feeding the infant, and while they were there, the time for a feeding came along.

“As the young mother proceeded to discreetly nurse the child, the Couvillon’s daughter Nicole, then about 6, observed this with great interest and asked her mother what was going on.

“Vonne explained that the mother was feeding the baby; she was giving it its milk.

“Nicole thought about this for a moment, then asked, ‘Does she have cereal in the other one?’”

Inflation casualty?

When I was a cheerleader at Istrouma High, our most popular cheer was, “Two bits, four bits, six bits, a dollar; all for the Indians, stand up and holler!”

Carl Papyson said it’s been many years since he heard anyone talk about two bits, etc.

He wonders, “Is it that the older generation is gone or is it because you can’t buy anything for 25 cents anymore?”

Radio nostalgia

Lonnie wonders if the new sports talk station at 910 AM is going to use the old slogan of WLCS, the rock station formerly at that slot:

“The 910 spot on your dial makes your day worthwhile!”

Serenading the pope

The Baton Rouge Magnet High School Festival Singers, directed by Robbie Giroir, will visit Italy on Feb. 6-14 for a series of performances.

On Feb. 13, the singers will represent Baton Rouge during an audience with Pope Benedict XVI and sing for him.

Annalee Campbell said the trip will cost each of the 22 students $3,520. The group needs to raise $16,000, so “students needing either full or partial support” can make the once-in-a-lifetime trip. If you can help, call (225) 938-1134.

Purr-fectly delightful

Cat Haven will hold its 13th annual Cat Tales and Cocktails on Sept. 28 at The Lake House, 2323 Old Hammond Highway.

The theme is “Fishing with Felines,” and there will be both online and silent auctions.

There’ll also be food, drink and music. I’ll be the emcee, but don’t let that stop you from coming out. Lady Katherine will be there to tell how she got me to be nice to her cats when we first got together.

A short video by Wayne Pacelle, president and CEO of the Humane Society of the United States and author of “The Bond,” will be presented.

Tickets, at $100, are available at www.cathaven.org or (225) 636-2680.

Online auction bidders can go to www.biddingforgood.com/cathaven2012gala.

Eggs-citing news

Martha said she was thrilled by our mention of duck eggs:

“My husband is allergic to chicken eggs, and we have been searching for a source for duck eggs — which seem to be as scarce as hens’ teeth.

“It is kind of hard to go without desserts and such, which all call for eggs. What’s a poor man to do?

“Please let us know some sources so we can finally enjoy cake and pie once more.”

Worthy causes

The Courtney Banta Memorial Bike-A-Thon/Trike-A-Thon on Saturday starts with registration at 7:30 a.m. at OLOL Community Hospital in Napoleonville.

The event, started 11 years ago in Paincourtville by The Pink Team of Assumption, has raised more than $500,000 for St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital.

There’s a balloon and live butterfly release, and box dinners will be served along with hot dogs, sweets and drinks.

Call Glenda Daigle at (985) 369-2111.

That’s busy!

After a reader cited the expression “Busy as a one-armed paper-hanger” as an example of Southern hyperbole, Gene Duke offered this version:

“Busy as a one-armed paper-hanger with the itch working on the ceiling and the glue is not holding.”

That’s busier!

John Rooney of Rockport, Texas, gets personal with this variation on an old saying:

“How about ‘Busier than a set of jumper cables at an Anders family reunion picnic?’”

I’ll have you know, John, that our last family reunion in Mississippi was a sedate affair, celebrating my rich cousins’ move into their fine, new home.

Some of us even stayed around to help them get the wheels off …
