While tailgating today, lock your car, the Vandals have arrived. A century ago, Idaho’s basketball team played with such intensity and ferocity that sportswriters said they vandalized their opponents. Mascots have been tributes to weather events in their respective regions. As noted in a previous column, the University of Miami Hurricanes have a mascot called “Sebastian the Ibis” because it’s the first animal to come out of hiding after a hurricane. Numerous colleges and universities across the Southeast and the Plains use tornadoes, twisters and storms. In Ames, Iowa State has the Cyclones and so does Centenary College in Hackettstown, N.J. Fans in Calcasieu Parish cheer for the Sulphur High Golden Tornadoes. In Portland, Maine, it’s the University of New England Nor’easters, and in the Bronx, it’s the Lehman College Lightning. Fastcast: Hot and humid.
