Around Acadiana for Sept. 11, 2012

The Center for Cultural and Eco-Tourism’s Backyard Lecture Series continues at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday with the topic, “Louisiana in Film: Fact or Fiction.”

The series is free and held at Vermilionville.

The lecture will explore how Louisiana is portrayed in documentaries and major motion pictures, and the challenges of presenting the state’s people and cultures accurately.

Filmmakers Michelle Benoit and Glen Pitre will lead the discussion.

On Saturday, the center will hold its annual fundraiser, Archive Aid, at the Blue Moon Saloon featuring live music and free food. The event benefits the center’s Archives of Cajun and Creole Folklore. Doors open Saturday at 7 p.m. and entry is $10.

Symphony benefit Friday

The Acadiana Symphony Orchestra presents “Hitting the Haute Note,” a couture fashion show by Raoul Blanco of fashions inspired by the iconic 1950s model Dovima, on Friday at La Marquise, 1925 Kaliste Saloom Road.

Pre-show cocktails are at 5 p.m. and the show starts at 5:45 p.m. The event also features a live and silent auction. General admission is $60 and VIP seating is $100.

Blanco will be available after the show for consultations.

A portion of the proceeds will benefit the Acadiana Symphony Orchestra and Conservatory of Music. Tickets are available at: http://www.acadianasymphony.org.

Walk benefits ministry

The Second annual Run Upper Lafayette, 5K walk/run and one-mile fun run, will be held at 8 a.m. Saturday at Pelican Park in Carencro.

The event is co-sponsored by the Upper Lafayette Economic Development Foundation and Bridge Ministry of Acadiana.

Net proceeds will benefit the Bridge Ministry.

Registration is $25 for early registration and $30 on race day.

Culinary event sponsors

The Acadiana Culinary Classic, a benefit for Hearts of Hope, is seeking sponsorships for its Oct. 8 event at the Cajundome Convention Center.

The cooking competition is a one-of-a-kind culinary event that benefits the Hearts of Hope’s three programs: Children’s Advocacy Center, Sexual Abuse Response Center and Sexual Assault Nurse Examiners.

Ballet benefit Sept. 28

Alla Prima, an evening to benefit Lafayette Ballet Theatre at 6:30 p.m. Sept. 28 at the Acadiana Center for the Arts.

The event is an evening of dance, art and music and will feature a special performance and costumes designed by former Lafayette Ballet Theatre principal dancer, Victoria Richard.
