Health screenings offered Saturday in Baker
Baker Councilman Charles Vincent and his Mwalimu Institute are sponsoring free health screenings for sickle cell anemia, diabetes, blood pressure and cholesterol from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday at the Baker branch library, 3501 Groom Road. A number of health care professionals will conduct the screenings, and health organizations will be represented.
Tax sessions
Taxing bodies will hold public hearings in the Feliciana parishes this week on the question of whether to “roll back” or “roll forward” after this year’s property reassessments.
On Tuesday, the West Feliciana Parish Law Enforcement District’s hearing is scheduled for 8:30 a.m. in the courthouse, and the parish’s 911 Communications District’s will be at 9 a.m. at the district building, 9938 West Feliciana Parkway. The West Feliciana School Board’s hearing is at 5 p.m. Tuesday at the School Board office.
In East Feliciana Parish, the sheriff’s hearing will be at 9 a.m. Wednesday at the civil division office, 11315 Bank St., Clinton, while the assessor’s also will be at 9 a.m. Wednesday at his office, 12064 Martston St., Clinton.
Lane program
Lane Regional Medical Center’s Diabetes Support Group meets at 6 p.m. Tuesday at the Zachary hospital. The support group is for people with Type 1 and Type 2 diabetes and their families, friends and caregivers.
Bayou Sara battle
Louisiana’s Civil War past comes alive at Audubon State Historic Site in West Feliciana Parish on Saturday and Sunday, as re-enactors present a look at life in Civil War Louisiana in various activities. Small re-enactments of the 1862 Battle at Bayou Sara will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday and 1:30 p.m. Sunday.
Computer class
The Jackson branch of the Audubon Regional Library plans a 9 a.m.-to-5 p.m. class Monday on protecting home computers from hackers looking for bank account numbers and other sensitive information. Contact the State Library at (888) 487-2700 to register and reserve a computer for the course.
OLLI programs resume
The Feliciana Chapter of the Osher Lifelong Learning Institute at LSU is back in action this fall, with a 10 a.m. coffee Sept. 13 at First Baptist Church in St. Francisville. Paul Davidson of the Black Bear Conservation Coalition will be speaking. Yoga classes resume Sept. 17; call (225) 578-6763 for information.

Highway meeting
A Department of Transportation and Development representative is scheduled to be available from 9:30 a.m. to 11 a.m. Wednesday at the Zachary Chamber of Commerce Office to discuss the proposed widening of La. 64 through the city.
