Pat Shingleton for Sept. 1, 2012

The peak wind gust for Tropical Storm Isaac was 57 miles per hour. Ironically, today marks the fourth anniversary of the worst storm that ever hit Baton Rouge. Katrina’s sustained winds clicked up to only 45 mph, with gusts at 49 and Andrew, in 1991, recorded 70 m.p.h. gusts. Another September storm, Betsy, logged winds at 58 mph, gusting to 92 on the 12th of the month in 1965.

Isaac’s winds are just behind Gustav’s, which blasted us with the highest, sustained winds of any storm ever recorded in Baton Rouge, hitting 61 mph, with gusts measuring 91. Similar to Gustav, Isaac has caused power outages and flooding. Gustav caused $4.3 billion in damage and 48 statewide deaths. Today marks the halfway point of Hurricane Season 2012. Fastcast: Gross
