Looking North for July 12, 2012

Civil War re-enactors dressed in reproduction costumes of the armies of both the North and South will turn back the calendar Saturday to 1862 at Oakley Plantation, now part of Audubon State Historic Site on La. 965 in West Feliciana Parish.

The 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. program, Life on the Home Front, will include a Confederate recruiting station, militia drills and Civil War weapons demonstrations. Visitors also may examine the “newest” substitutes for imported items caught in the Union blockade of Southern ports.

Audubon is the setting for the 200-year-old Oakley House, temporary home and inspiration to John James Audubon in the 1800s.

Church directory

The East Feliciana Tourist Commission, Chamber of Commerce and Economic Development Commission are compiling a directory of parish churches. They ask area ministers to call (225) 634-7155 to be included in the directory.

Business seminars

The West Feliciana Economic Development Commission and other business groups are presenting two free seminars on business topics next week. A discussion of Tuscaloosa Marine Shale oil exploration and production will be held at 6 p.m. Tuesday at West Feliciana High School’s auditorium.

Economic strategy

A community meeting is set at 6 p.m. Thursday at the Baker Municipal Building, 3325 Groom Road, to discuss a strategic plan for economic development in the city. The public is invited.

Artist of the month

The East Feliciana Parish Clerk of Court’s Office is featuring the photography of Aaron Hogan and Tate Tullier in their exhibit “The Faces of Alzheimer’s,” which was sponsored by Alzheimer’s Services of the Capital Area and Charlie’s Place in Baton Rouge. The office is on St. Helena Street in Clinton and is open from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday through Friday Lane program

Selective Hearing will be the host for a free Lunch and Learn program at noon Tuesday at Lane Regional Medical Center in Zachary.

Boating safety course

The 20th Judicial District Attorney’s Office is sponsoring a boating safety course from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. July 28 at the St. Francisville United Methodist Church, 4744 Fidelity St.

The course will be taught by the Department of Wildlife and Fisheries. All persons born after Jan. 1, 1984, must complete a boating education course and carry proof of completion to operate a motorboat in excess of 10 horsepower.
