Prayer breakfast scheduled Friday in Baker

The annual Mayor’s Prayer Breakfast in Baker will be from 7 a.m. to 9 a.m. Friday in the Baker Municipal Auditorium. Admission at the door is $6 per person.

Southern University coach Roger Cador will preside, while Randy Knaps, Grace Thompson, and LaTania Anderson will sing.

Area ministers will lead prayers and scripture readings. Judge Duke Welch, of the state 1st Circuit Court of Appeal, will be the guest speaker.

The public is invited.

New terms start

Elected municipal officials in Baker, Slaughter, Jackson and Norwood begin new four-year terms in office Sunday. Swearing-in programs have been set:

  • Thursday, 5 p.m., Norwood Town Hall.
  • Thursday, 6 p.m., Jackson Town Hall.
  • Monday, 6:30 p.m., Slaughter Town Hall.
  • July 8, 2 p.m., Baker Municipal Center.

Parish sheriffs and clerks of court also are beginning new terms, but the officials in the Felicianas aren’t planning any special ceremonies.

Sheriff J. Austin Daniel and Clerk of Court Felicia Ann Hendl of West Feliciana were sworn in last week, and East Feliciana Parish Sheriff Talmadge Bunch took his oath Wednesday.

Courthouse recognized

The Foundation for Historical Louisiana has chosen the East Feliciana Parish Courthouse project to receive a 2012 preservation award that will be presented to parish officials at a banquet next month. The foundation’s award will be the second the courthouse project, funded by the state and private donations, has received this year.

Farmers market open

The West Feliciana Parish’s Farmers Market is open from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Thursdays at the old fair barn near the water tower in St. Francisville.

Baker planning

Baker will hold two meetings next month to discuss a proposed strategic plan to guide the city’s economic development for the next five to 10 years. The meetings are at noon July 11 at First United Methodist Church, 1255 Camellia Ave., and at 6 p.m. July 12 at the Baker Municipal Building.

Meanwhile, Baker residents and business people may fill out surveys on what they would like to see in the plan by visiting the city’s website, http://www.cityofbakerla.us, and clicking on the links to the survey sites.

Fireworks

St. Francisville’s annual fireworks display will be at the town ball park on Burnett Road on July 4. You’ll hear music, and the American Legion will provide refreshments.

The fireworks will start at dark. Main Street Director Laurie Walsh says a good time to arrive is between 6:30 p.m. and 7 p.m.

Library programs

The Baker branch library, 3501 Groom Road, offers a program at 2 p.m. Monday on making “bandana bags” from colorful bandanas and beads.

The Zachary branch library, 1900 Church St., will have a 2 p.m. program Tuesday on making “Shrinky Dink” key chains. All supplies will be provided. Call (225) 658-1870 to register.
