Around the Westside for June 20

Congratulations are in order for the West Baton Rouge Museum, which recently won a 2012 Telly Award in the history/biography category for its film chronicling cultural aspects and benefits of the parish.

The short film, “West Baton Rouge Museum,” was created by Dale A. Smith, of Multi-Media Productions, and produced by the museum.

During the aftermath of the BP Deepwater Horizon oil well blowout offshore Louisiana, parishes in south Louisiana affected by the disaster were provided grants to produce material assuring potential visitors and tourists that the region was still safe, fully functioning and had cultural, educational and recreational opportunities to offer.

The museum used the tourism dollars it received to produce the film, which premiered in November.

Telly Awards honor outstanding local, regional and cable TV commercials and programs, as well as video and film productions.

The museum’s video was selected from among entries from all 50 states and five continents.

The museum produced the high-definition video in both DVD and Blu-ray Disc formats.

Let’s go to the theater

The Doug Berky Theater will perform “The Lion and the Mouse” and “The Boy Who Cried Wolf” in West Baton Rouge Parish on Wednesday and Thursday.

On Wednesday, the show will be presented at the Port Allen Community Center, 749 N. Jefferson, and on Thursday the productions will take the stage at the Addis Community Center, 75200 La. 1 South. Both shows will begin at 10 a.m.

In addition to “The Lion and the Mouse” and “The Boy Who Cried Wolf”, Berky’s troupe may also perform “The Drip Nose Boy,” a Native-American tale, and “The Tiger’s Whisker,” a Korean tale.

Leadership training

New Roads is sponsoring a free series of parent leadership courses June 26-27 at Rosenwald Elementary School.

The classes will be from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m.

Dinner will be served during the seminars from 5 p.m. to 5:30 p.m.

Benefit roast

The public is invited to attend a celebrity roast “honoring” Iberville Parish President J. Mitchell Ourso on Thursday at the Carl F. Grant Civic Center.

The event kicks off at 6 p.m., hosted by We Are the Difference. Proceeds from the gathering benefit the Iberville Community Theatre.

Tickets are $25. A dinner of chicken fettuccine, corn, salad, bread and dessert will be served. A cash bar will be available.
