Around the Westside for May 23, 2012

On Friday, the Pointe Coupee Historical Society will present “King Creole,” starring Elvis Presley, as the fifth movie in its Louisiana Film Series.

The film was shot in New Orleans.

Show time begins at 7 p.m. at the Julien Poydras Museum and Arts Center, 500 W. Main St., in New Roads.

The event is free to the public. Fresh popcorn and ice-cold soft drinks will be available free of charge as well.

There will be an informal discussion after the movie for those who want to stay and talk about the film.

Barbecue dinner

Immaculate Heart of Mary Church will host its annual family festival June 3, at 11140 La. 77 in Maringouin.

Barbecued chicken dinners will be served for $6 a plate from 10:30 a.m. until 1:30 p.m. The event also will feature a raffle for $1,000, bingo and face painting for children.

Bingo will take place on June 1 immediately following a 5 p.m. social.

Computer classes

The West Baton Rouge Parish Library offers its second session of computer classes to parish residents Wednesday.

Attendees will be instructed in basics of computer operations and navigation such as performing searches, using email and learning about Microsoft Word.

The classes are scheduled from 11 a.m. until 12:30 p.m.

The final class will take place May 30.

Boat blessing

The public is invited to attend and/or participate in the Blessing of the Boats on Sunday at Old River Landing.

Barbecue fundraiser

The Kiwanis of Pointe Coupee will host its annual “Winner, Winner, Bar-B-Q Chicken Dinner” on July 15 at St. Mary Kiwanis Park.

Tickets are on sale now for the dinners, which will consist of barbecued chicken, baked beans, coleslaw and a roll.

Artists needed

Treasures of Pointe Coupee organizers have begun recruiting artists to take part in this year’s two- and three-dimensional artwork exhibit, scheduled for June 1-3.

Dow seeking applications

Dow Chemical Corp. is still taking applications for its annual Community Gives grant program for charitable organizations, nonprofits, and municipal and government agencies. Qualifying organizations that support science, technology, engineering, math, education, economic development and other criteria share in the $100,000 award.

Applications will be accepted online only through May 31.
