Looking North for May 17, 2012

Two state parks in the Felicianas are participating Saturday with the National Park Trust for “National Kids to Parks Day,” a promotion aimed at encouraging families to explore the outdoors and nearby parks.

Audubon State Historic Site on La. 965 in West Feliciana Parish will have a “Pond Crawl” from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, offering a look at the ecosystem in a pond on the park grounds.

Kids will be introduced to both the plant and animal life of the pond.

At Port Hudson State Historic Site on U.S. 61 north of Baton Rouge, a tour of Artillery Ridge will begin at 10 a.m. at the site museum, with a guide pointing out significant landmarks and features such as Union cannon positions.

Garage sale

A mega-garage sale will be held from 7 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday at Clinton United Methodist Church to benefit the Boy Scout Horse Wrangler Crew 997 program
at Avondale Scout Reservation.

Top teachers

The West Feliciana Parish School Board on Tuesday recognized the parish’s teachers of the year for 2012, Catherine Landry, Bains Lower Elementary; Amanda Crutchfield, West Feliciana Middle School; and Mark Lester, West Feliciana High School.

The board also recognized Heather Howle, of West Feliciana Middle School, and Lorraine Beckham, Bains Elementary, for receiving national certification in December.

Blood drive Friday

United Blood Services, the sole provider of blood to Lane Regional Medical Center, will conduct a blood drive at the hospital from 7 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Friday.

The blood drive is open to the public and registration is not required.

More Lane programs

Lane Regional Medical Center’s Ask the Doctor lunch-and-learn series continues Tuesday from 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. in the hospital’s staff development classroom with Dr. Joshua Best discussing effective treatments for symptoms of menopause.

Professionals from Lane Behavioral Health will discuss depression and anxiety during another lunch-and-learn session at 11:30 a.m. Wednesday in the same classroom. Reservations

Nursing home award

Lane Nursing Home recently received the 2011 Louisiana Nursing Home Capstone Quality Award, presented by eQHealth Solutions, the Medicare quality improvement organization for Louisiana.

Lane is recognized as one of only 31 nursing homes in the state for achieving continued improvement of resident care through reducing restraint use and reducing pressure ulcer incidence, which are national health-care priorities of the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services.

Memorial Day nearing

The Flags at Port Hudson event sponsored by the Boy Scouts will be Saturday, May 26, at the Port Hudson National Cemetery on La. 3113, off U.S. 61 west of Zachary, starting with registration at 8 a.m. All Scouting organizations and the public are invited to help place flags at the 16,000 gravesites.

Community market

The Community Market in St. Francisville is held every third Saturday in Parker Park from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., featuring music, baked goods, jewelry, clothes, homemade bread and vegetables.
