Healing herbs discussed
Vermilionville celebrates the opening of its new healing garden filled with local herbs traditionally used by traiteurs, or healers, at 5:30 p.m. Tuesday.
The event will be followed by a guided tour and a 6:30 p.m. discussion with local master gardeners and historians on the topic of “Herbal Lore in the Rural Communities.”
The discussion is part of the Center for Cultural and Eco-Tourism’s monthly “In Your Own Backyard” lecture series, which is free and open to the public.
Foundation gets award
The University of Louisiana at Lafayette Foundation recently received the 2012 Outstanding Corporate or Foundation Support Award from the Louisiana Association of Museums.
The foundation was recognized for issuing bonds in 2002 to expedite the museum’s construction, and this year, created a private nonprofit organization, the Hilliard Museum Society, to continue to support the university.
Local lawyer Warren Perrin, a university alumni member, received the association’s Outstanding Individual Support Award.
Signing event Saturday
Alex V. Cook, author of “Louisiana Saturday Night,” will sign copies of the book that details the state’s blues, Cajun and zydeco clubs at 2 p.m. Saturday at Barnes & Noble Booksellers.
“Louisiana Saturday Night: Looking for a Good Time in South Louisiana’s Juke Joints, Honky-Tonks, and Dance Halls” is published by LSU Press.
Postal food drive Saturday
Postal delivery workers will collect nonperishable food items left at mailboxes on their routes Saturday as part of the 19th annual National Association of Letter Carrier’s Food Drive.
Last year’s event generated 24,000 pounds of food valued at more than $40,000 and provided 16,000 meals to families throughout Acadiana.
The annual food drive is a collaboration between United Way of Acadiana, local post offices and Food Net.
Fundraiser goes vaudeville
“Vaudeville Spectacular!” — a fundraiser for the Performing Arts Society of Acadiana will be at 7 p.m. Saturday at The Victorian, 302 Main St., Broussard.
The event features a silent and live auction, fine cuisine and music by Vagabond Swing.
Also Saturday, Darrellyn Burts will be honored with PASA’s Award of Excellence.
