Palmetto Trail opens

The Palmetto Trail, a 2.5-mile trail in the Bayou Teche National Wildlife Refuge, has been reopened for the public to enjoy.

The trial had been closed for hunting season. It is located on Janet E. Road just off U.S. 90 near Franklin.

Writing event offered

The life-writers with the University of Louisiana at Lafayette Continuing Education program will be sharing their written works at 6:30 p.m. Thursday at the Parkview Library.

Events set at hospice

The Hospice of Acadiana will host a “Journaling Through Grief Workshop” from 9 a.m. to noon Thursday in the Hospice Conference Center.

The event will be hosted by spiritual director and longtime journalist Joan Broussard.

Follow-up sessions will be offered Feb. 14 and Feb. 28 and March 6, 13, 20 and 27.

On Feb. 13, Hospice will host “Yes, I Remember It Well” with local historian L.C. Melchior, who will share stories of Acadiana.

The event starts at 10 a.m. and is held every second Monday of the month.

Events at arts center

The Acadiana Center for the Arts invites the public to attend “The Art of Improvisation” presented by Rhythmic Tapestries Tuesday.

The performance explores the music of West African, Brazilian, Caribbean and Native American cultures.

Audience members can also join in for a culminating drum circle.

Tickets are $6.

On Wednesday, the Southern Circuit Film Series will present “The Toe Tactic” at 7:30 p.m.

The screening will be followed by a discussion with the filmmaker.

Tickets are $6 to $8.

Grant deadline nears

All grant applications for the Lourdes Foundation 2012 funding cycle are due to the foundation office by noon on Feb. 15.

Any applications received after the deadline will not be considered in the current funding cycle.

Those requesting consideration must meet the following criteria: be a designated 501 (C)3 organization; have a mission, goals and values consistent with those of Our Lady of Lourdes Regional Medical Center and Lourdes Foundation; have a project that interfaces with the hospital’s and foundation’s mission statements; have a project that is health-care based; and have a project that will reach, touch or enhance the lives of people most in need.

Funds awarded are for calendar year 2012 and there is no guarantee that any funds will be available during any subsequent funding cycle.
