After picking Southern for its close location to his family, Danny Johnson is coming up big for the Jaguars

Advocate staff photo by HILARY SCHEINUK -- Southern's Danny Johnson (10) runs an interception back to the 10-yard line before being pushed out of bounds against Arkansas Pine Bluff, Saturday, Oct. 4, in Southern's A.W. Mumford Stadium in Baton Rouge.

Former and current coaches say the sky is the limit for Danny Johnson. He’s a father, electrical engineering major and freshman cornerback and punt/kick returner for the Jaguars. “I think he’s done a great job, stepping in as a freshman and playing college football for the first time,” head coach Dawson Odums said. “He’s made a… Continue reading →

Southern bought in to coach Dawson Odums, and he has rewarded the Jaguars for that

Advocate staff photo by HILARY SCHEINUK -- Southern coach Dawson Odums

Grambling’s unexpected and dramatic ascension from the Southwestern Athletic Conference cellar to championship contender in one year has left a lot of people scratching their heads. But not at Southern. “Yeah, it’s believable,” Jaguars receiver Justin Morgan said. It’s believable because Southern authored a similar (albeit less dramatic) turnaround just a year ago: It came off a 4-7… Continue reading →

Southern makes most of WR depth

Advocate staff photo by HILARY SCHEINUK -- Southern wide receiver Willie Quinn (25) carries the ball on a kickoff return against Arkansas Pine Bluff, Saturday, Oct. 4, in Southern's A.W. Mumford Stadium in Baton Rouge.

Southern lost its most productive wide receiver from last season when Lee Doss ran out of eligibility after having an All-Southwestern Athletic Conference year. The Jaguars lost one of their most productive returning receivers when Randall Menard suffered a season-ending toe injury on the first series of downs this season. Additionally, Southern has thrown the ball… Continue reading →

First-year coach Broderick Fobbs returns Grambling to traditional place as a winner

Grambling State head football coach Broderick Fobbs

Along with Grambling’s now infamous forfeiture, walkout and boycotts last season, Robert Bruno struck the biggest nerve with the venerable program. Speaking to WWL-TV in June, Bruno — then the commissioner of the Louisiana Stadium and Exposition District — suggested separating Southern and Grambling’s annual rivalry in the Bayou Classic, wary that Grambling’s struggles in… Continue reading →

After Bayou Classic, Southern awaits another NCAA visit, hopes for relief

Advocate file photo by CATHERINE THRELKELD -- Southern University Chancellor James Llorens, left, listens as Athletic Director Dr. William Broussard answers questions regarding the university's NCAA postseason eligibility at Southern's A. W. Mumford Field House in February. Southern's one-year NCAA postseason ban expires Tuesday. A group of NCAA officials will visit the Southern campus next Thursday to determine what to do next, Broussard said.

The postseason ban the NCAA has placed on Southern will not prevent the Jaguars from participating in the Southwestern Athletic Conference championship game if they defeat Grambling in the Bayou Classic on Saturday. Soon, Southern hopes to be rid of the ban altogether. The one-year ban, which the NCAA instituted as punishment for inadequate reporting of student-athletes’ Academic… Continue reading →

Some programs divvy up the responsibilities for co-coordinators by having a running game coordinator and a passing… Continue reading →

Johnathan Williams settles in as starting quarterback for Grambling

Advocate staff photo by HILARY SCHEINUK -- Southern quarterback Austin Howard carries the ball past Alcorn State's Corey Williams in Saturday's game.

By admission, Grambling quarterback Johnathan Williams isn’t much of a talker. “That’s just never been me,” the chuckling redshirt junior said. “I always felt it was better to just show than talk.” So showing was his goal. Entering the season as a backup behind his senior roommate D.J. Williams and redshirt freshman Stephen Johnson… Continue reading →

With Grambling improved, excitement grows for the Bayou Classic

Advocate staff photo by RICHARD ALAN HANNON -- Southern players run onto the field prior to the start of their game against Grambling during the 40th annual Bayou Classic.

There was a time when conventional wisdom held that, when it came to the Bayou Classic, records didn’t matter. Fans would fill the Mercedes-Benz Superdome regardless. And they did, making Thanksgiving weekend in New Orleans a must for those wanting to both see and be seen — the model for such events around the country.… Continue reading →

Season statistics project a competitive Bayou Classic

Advocate staff photo by HILARY SCHEINUK -- Southern head coach Dawson Odums coaches from the sidelines against Mississippi Valley State, Saturday, Nov. 15, at A.W. Mumford Stadium.

Grambling doesn’t have the gaudy statistics one might expect from a team playing for a championship. The Tigers are tied with Southern for the Southwestern Athletic Conference West Division lead heading into the teams’ showdown in the regular-season finale in the Bayou Classic. But they’re in the middle of the conference in most of the primary statistical categories.… Continue reading →

The defending division and conference champions went from being the hunted to being the hunter. Grambling, which won just… Continue reading →

Advocate staff photo by HILARY SCHEINUK -- Southern quarterback Deonte Shorts throws a pass against Mississippi Valley State, Saturday, Nov. 15, at A.W. Mumford Stadium.

Southern quarterback Deonte Shorts hasn’t played as much as he expected this season, but he’s probably experienced more than he expected.
